Back in March, at a meeting of the Knox County Parks and Recreation board, someone reported that the Fox Ridge golf course had been closed down and put up for sale. When the property went to auction, a large portion of it, a 96-acre swath, received no bids and that’s when someone mentioned to a board member that it might make a good park.
At first, the idea didn’t make much sense to us. It was another large piece of property of which we would have to take care, it would require us to hire additional part-time staff, would cost us more fuel and other materials to keep in proper condition. It didn’t seem like something we should take on, especially as we had just learned that our longtime assistant, Vicki Harmon, had been diagnosed with cancer and would be leaving work to seek treatment.
In a time of transition, taking on a major project didn’t seem like the best idea.
