Serving a fresh catch, Jeff and Tammy Horton bring unusual business to Vincennes
Jeff Horton is not just of a dying breed, he’s the last of his kind.
As he relaxed in a chair for a few moments before the business day began at his fish market and restaurant, Horton thought back to a man he used to know named Johnny Farmer, from Grayville, Ill. Farmer, as Horton tells it, was the only other man, beside himself, who made a living fishing the Wabash River. With Farmer’s passing several years ago, Horton is now the only one who holds the distinction. Horton’s Fish Market, 2021 Washington Ave., is the only brick-and-mortar establishment from which locals can buy fresh fish that was caught from the most local of waters – mostly catfish, both the channel and flathead varieties and buffalo fish, which is one of the most popular items.
