Registration for the 2nd annual Vincennes Kiwanis Run for Riley, an effort to raise funds for Indiana’s Riley Children’s Hospital, begins this month for the late-autumn event.
The 2014 Half-Marathon (13.1 miles) and 5K Walk-Run will be Nov. 15. Early registration can be made now through Oct. 1.
“In planning we looked at the schedule of half marathon events in the southern part of the state,” said Andy Ellerman, treasurer for the Kiwanis Club and one of the organizers of the event. “It’s about the only time there is no conflict with other marathons.”
This year’s event is a week earlier than in 2013, an effort organizers hope might mean better weather and also to alleviate any pre-holiday plans people may have. Last year’s event was to coincide with the Downtown Vincennes Christmas Stroll.
“It was cold last year,” said Mark Hill, an organizer and avid runner. “The first event went well, even if it was cold.” The 2014 Run for Riley will begin and end at Vincennes Lincoln High School, 1535 S. Hart Street Road. Organizers are planning somewhat of a different course, one that will eliminate or limit rail crossings or events such as funerals.
